After losing Pete Walker to Clewiston, Glades Day acted swiftly in naming its new head football coach.
The school promoted Eric Pitts, who spent 18 years as a Gators assistant coach, to replace Walker. Pitts, a respected presence on the sidelines, was a logical choice.
“He’s in-house, he’s a veteran,” Glades Day Co-Athletic Director Joe Guethle said. “We’re pleased. He’s excited. We’re excited he’s staying here.”
Pitts has been around Glades Day for most of his adult life. He is a 1988 Glades Day graduate and became an assistant coach in 1995. He has been defensive coordinator since 2000.
During his time as an assistant, the Gators won four state championships. Pitts also played on the 1986 state championship team.
Guethle said assistant Brian Seider will remain on staff. Zack Threlkeld is mulling an offer to coach elsewhere, but may return. Veteran offensive line coach Mandy Perez retired at the end of the season.
